For the student, paddling the canoe should ultimately be both a rewarding and life changing experience. It's something that not everyone gets to say they have done, let alone on the Great Columbia River! This is a chance for students to get to know their teachers. Canoeing at the beginning of the year gives the students a thrill and excitement for what is to come, and if at the end of the year, they keep a lasting sense of camaraderie. No matter if he or she is in the third grade, college, or a member of the staff, all participants will feel safe and excited at all times.
In the Fall of 2009 we ventured up to Northern Ontario with the hopes
of building a birch bark canoe. After one month of gathering our building materials from the forest and one month
of construction we finished our Shishcan Chi-man or the Sprit Lake Birch Bark Canoe; Sprit Lake being the area
where we gathered most of the materials for the Canoe. We were extremly honored to have the privilage and approval
of the native peoples to harvest our materials from such a special forest.
