Handcrafted Canoes Built to the Highest Standards

For the student, paddling the canoe should ultimately be both a rewarding and life changing experience. It's something that not everyone gets to say they have done, let alone on the Great Columbia River! This is a chance for students to get to know their teachers. Canoeing at the beginning of the year gives the students a thrill and excitement for what is to come, and if at the end of the year, they keep a lasting sense of camaraderie. No matter if he or she is in the third grade, college, or a member of the staff, all participants will feel safe and excited at all times.

Shishcan Chi-man

In the Fall of 2009 we ventured up to Northern Ontario with the hopes of building a birch bark canoe. After one month of gathering our building materials from the forest and one month of construction we finished our Shishcan Chi-man or the Sprit Lake Birch Bark Canoe; Sprit Lake being the area where we gathered most of the materials for the Canoe. We were extremly honored to have the privilage and approval of the native peoples to harvest our materials from such a special forest.

The Goat Canoe

Our first fiberglass canoe was built in the summer of 2009 by Adam Wicks-Arshack, Peter Bruno and Xander Demetrios. It was designed to replicate the birch bark voyageur canoes used in the Fur Trade. With wooden gunwales and thwarts, this replica is very similar to a birch bark canoe, but has the strength and durability of modern fiberglass canoes.

Algonquin Hunter's Canoe

In the summer of 2008, John Zinser and Adam Wicks-Arshack entered the Canadian bush with one canoe, several hand tools and enough food for one month. After weeks of hard work they paddled back to civilization in two canoes, one being a birch bark canoe built in the traditional style of the Algonquin and Ojibway tribes using no nails, screws, or glue.
